Instructions for Authors

Material submitted must be unpublished, and cannot be on charge for publication at any other journal. Articles written in Portuguese must follow the Official Brazilian Spelling. When originated from foreign institutions, they may be published in English, the way they are submitted.

Submitted material is firstly reviewed by editors, who will check whether it fits the mandatory standards of Brazilian Journal of TeleHealth, and all technical rules required for submission of the originals. Secondly, the article is sent to two proofreaders with expertise in the issue of the work. The IDs of both author(s) and revisors will be kept in secrecy and anonimity.

Opinions contained in articles, including changes made by editors, are of exclusive responsibility of the authors.


Types of scientific papers accepted for submission

Original Articles: Until authors*

New information of interest related to experimental research, applications (support or education), development or support in telemedicine and telehealth. It may contain Introduction, Purpose (Aim), Methodology, Results, Discussion and Conclusion, and meet the following requirements:

  1. Words: up to {1_palavras}, excluding references, tables and figures.
  2. References: up to {1_ref}.
  3. Tables/Figures: up to {1_img_tab}. Figures made by parts are going to be considered individually.
  4. Abstract: up to {1_resumo} words. They must contain the following items: Aims, Materials and Methods, Results and Conclusion.
  5. Keywords: From 3 to 6 keywords, preferentialy according to the Describers in Health Science (DeCS, in Portuguese) or to the Medical Subject Heading (MeSH), by the National Library of Medicine (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/).

Reviewing Articles: Until authors*

Articles of synthesis concerning very well-established issues bearing a critical analysis of the consulted bibliography and of the conclusions. They must meet the following requirements:

  1. Words: up to {2_palavras}, excluding references, tables and figures.
  2. References: up to {2_ref}.
  3. Tables/Figures: up to {2_img_tab}. Figures made by parts are going to be considered individually.
  4. Abstract: up to {2_resumo} words. Abstracts must not be divided into items. References must not be quoted in the abstracts.
  5. Keywords: From 3 to 6 keywords, preferentialy according to the Describers in Health Science (DeCS, in Portuguese) or to the Medical Subject Heading (MeSH), by the National Library of Medicine (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/).

Experience Reports: Until authors*

Brief discussion of a case experience with unique features of interest for the issue. It may contain introduction, na experience report, discussion and final comments. They must meet the following requirements:

  1. Words: up to {3_palavras}, excluding references, tables and figures.
  2. References: up to {3_ref}.
  3. Tables/Figures: up to {3_img_tab}. Figures made by parts are going to be considered individually.
  4. Abstracts: up to {3_resumo} words. Abstracts must define: a) what was made; b) the finding; c) the conclusion. Those information cannot be divided into items. References cannot be quoted in the abstracts of the papers.
  5. Keywords: From 3 to 6 keywords, preferentialy according to the Describers in Health Science (DeCS, in Portuguese) or to the Medical Subject Heading (MeSH), by the National Library of Medicine (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/).

Theses Abstract: Until authors*

They must present the same content of the abstract of the dissertation/thesis submitted to a University. They may contain Introduction, Aims, Materials and Methods, Results, Conclusion. There is no revision of text for Abstracts of Theses. It is important to remember that the publication of the abstract does not preclude the subsequent publication of the full work in any journal. They must meet the following requirements:

  1. Words: up to {4_palavras}.
  2. Abstracts: up to {4_resumo} words. Abstracts must define: a) what was made; b) the finding; c) the conclusion. Those information cannot be divided into items. References cannot be quoted in the abstracts of the papers.
  3. Keywords: From 3 to 6 keywords, preferentialy according to the Describers in Health Science (DeCS, in Portuguese) or to the Medical Subject Heading (MeSH), by the National Library of Medicine (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/).
  4. Full name of author(s) and advisor(s).
  5. Cetificate of approval of the post-graduate program.

*A larger number of authors will be accepted only in case of works of exceptional complexity or multicentered. In this case, it is going to be necessary sending a letter to the Editorial Board, describing the participation of each author in the submitted piece.


Other Sections

Letters to the Editor: Until authors

Constructive, objective, and pedagogical criticism to the papers published. The discussion of specific subjects may be published at the discretion of editors.

  • Words: up to {5_palavras}.

Editorial

It may be written by the Editors or asked by them to experts. The subjects of political nature must be approved by the Editorial Council Board.


General Rules for Scientific Articles

General Rules

This is mandatory sending a letter of submission (digital or via post office) signed by all authors. In that letter, authors should:

  1. Indicate that the article is original, unpublished and that it is not or will not be submitted to any other periodical, while being considered for publication by Brazilian Journal of TeleHealth.
  2. Declare that authors took part in the project conception and/or in its final draft, agreeing fully with the version sent to publication.
  3. Mention that there were no ommitted information about funding for research or concerning relationship with people or companies that may have any interests in the data covered by the article.

Copyright Transfer

At the time of acceptance of the manuscript for publication, all authors must send a letter of authorization of the copyright transfer, recognizing the property and copyright of the paper(s) to Brazilian Journal of TeleHealth. The article is going to be published just after this letter is received..

Detailed Standards

The full content of the article must obey the "Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals", published by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (available in http://www.icmje.org/). Tables and figures should be submitted on separate pages, numbered in Arabic, placed at the end of the text, and should also include the title and footnotes. Even finished and following these recommendations, articles are going to be edited in accordance to the style of the magazine.

Coverpage

They must contain:

  1. The title of the article in Portuguese, which must be concise and explanatory, representing the content of the work, avoiding abbreviations and details of the place and the city where the study was conducted, except when such information is essential to understanding the conclusions.
  2. Title in English.
  3. FULL name of each author followed by their most important degree and institution for teaching, research or service to which it belongs (city, state and country).
  4. Corresponding author: set the corresponding author and put full address (with zip code, telephone, fax and mandatorily email address).
  5. Institution: declare the institution for teaching, research or service in which the work was conducted.
  6. Conflict of interest: describe any connection among any of the authors and companies or enterprises that may have any kind of interest in the disclosure of the manuscript submitted for publication. If there is no conflict of interest, write "nothing to declare".
  7. Financial support for the project: describe whether the work received financial support, which the source (full) and the case number.
  8. Total number of words in the text (excluding title page, abstract, thanks, references, tables, graphics and figures), in the summary and in the abstract.Place, also, the total number of tables, graphs and figures and the number of references.

Summary and Abstract

They must be structured according to the category of publication:

  1. Original Article: up to 200 words. It must contain the sections Aims, Materials and Methods, Results and Conclusion, described below:
    • Aims: describe the hypothesis tested or evaluated procedures.
    • Materials and Methods (Materials and Methods): describe briefly what was made and the materials used, including the number of patients, the methods used to data evaluation and to avoid bias.
    • Results: mention the study's findings, including indicators of statistical significance. Actual numbers and percentages should be included.
    • Conclusion: conclusions based on the findings must be summarized in a sentence or two.
  2. Review Article: up to {2_resumo} words. It should synthesize the content of the article, which must not be divided into items.
  3. Reporting Experience: up to {3_resumo} words. Summaries should include: a) what was done b) the finding c) the conclusion. This information should not be divided into items.

Remember also:

  • To the English title and the abstract, it is important to obey the grammar rules of the English language. The magazine reserves itself the right to make changes when necessary.
  • Do not use abbreviations.
  • References should not be cited in the abstracts.

Keywords

Must be listed below the abstracts, respecting the category of publication and in accordance to the Descriptors in Health Sciences (DeCS) or according to the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) of the National Library of Medicine (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/).

Text

Original Articles must be divided into sections, with the items: Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion and Conclusion, described below:

  • Introduction and Aims: Briefly describe the relevance of the topic, the reason for research and the specific goal(s) for the article submission.
  • Materials and Methods: Describe the research plan, the materials (or patients) and methods used, in that order. Explain in details how the research was confirmed and how subjectivity of observations was controlled. To ensure anonymity in the review process, the name of the institution where the work was contucted and the author's names or initials must not be mentioned.
  • Results: Present the results in a clear and logical sequence. If tables are used, do not duplicate the tabular data in the text, but describe trends and important points.
  • Talk: Describe the limitations of the research plan, materials (or patients) and methods, considering the purpose and results of the study. When the results are different from that obtained in earlier studies, justify the discrepancy. Include references.
  • Conclusion : When applicable, description must be made in brief sentences.

The other categories of publication have got free formatting.

Tables, Graphics and Illustrations

Each table, graphic and / or illustration will be sent separately by the system.

The suggested location for inserting tables, graphics and illlustrations, according to their order of appearance, should be marked in the text. Tables, charts and figures must submit a brief title and be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals, according to the order they are quoted in the text. Tables must present numerical data as a central information. The accompanying notes should be placed at the bottom of the table, with symbols in sequence. If there is any llustrations taken from another source, published or not, the original source must be mentioned below the table.

All tables, graphics and illustrations must have captions (captions and source when extracted of published work). It is essential that the caption describes all the characteristics of the object depicted.

The illustrations must be limited to the need to show the essential characteristics described in the manuscript. It is preferable that each illustration present only the area (s) of interest with enough surrounding area for orientation purposes. It is essential to indicate all features described in the caption using different identifiers for each characteristic (equilateral triangles should not be used as arrows). The identifiers must be applied directly on the figure. If there is more than one illustration belonging to a same goal, you must group them under a single label and identify them by letters (A, B, C etc.).

For tables and charts, use preferably files from Word or Excel software. To other illustrations (pictures, maps, prints, drawings and photographs in black and white), forward obligatorily files with JPG or PNG extension. To scan illustrations and / or photos, select 300 DPI resolution, in drawing modes or grayscale, without exceeding the limit of 10 Mb.

Units and Abbreviations

Units and abbreviations should meet the recommendations of Brazilian Association forTechnical Standards.

Abbreviations and acronyms should be avoided. Never use them in the title of the article and preferably do not use them in the abstract. When included in the text, they must be described in full at the first mention and followed by the abbreviation or acronym in parentheses.

References

They should be numbered and ordered according to the order of appearance in the text. Quotations will be identified in the text by their numbering overwritten. For submission of references, criteria from the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors, also known as the Vancouver style should be taken as a model. Authors should consult Citing Medicine, The NLM Style Guide for Authors, Editors, and Publishers (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/bookshelf/br.fcgi?book=citmed) and "Sample References" (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/bsd/uniform_requirements.html) for information on recommended formats.

Note : unpublished data and personal communications should not be included in the reference list, but may be cited in the text in parentheses: (Smith DJ, communication staff), (AC Brown, unpublished data). These data include papers submitted, but still non-accepted for publication.


Other Instructions

Brazilian Journal of TeleHealth does not accept editorial material for commercial purposes.

  • Conflict of Interest : This must be mentioned, with total clarity, the presence of public-private partnerships, support by agencies that fosters research, and collaboration from international groups to develop the survey.
  • Committee of Ethics in Research: works reporting results achieved in humans must be accompanied by authorization of the Committee of Ethics in Research of the Institution.
  • Term of Free and Informed Consent : articles dealing with clinical research in human subjects must include a statement that the participants signed the Term of Free and Informed Consent.
  • Acknowledgments : This should mention the cooperation of people and institutions, including acknowledgment for financial support and technical merit aid worthy of recognition, though it does not justify its inclusion among the authors.


Instructions for online submission

Articles must be submitted online in the section "Access". For this, register yourself, click on "submit for publication" and fill in the form according to the step-by-step below:

  1. Set the material in one of the categories of publication;
  2. Insert images, tables and captions;
  3. Register authors and co-authors;
  4. Register titles and keywords in English and in Portuguese;
  5. Insert abstracts in English and in Portuguese, institution name. Mailing address, financial support and letter to the editor (optional);
  6. Assemble the text of the manuscript itself in the system;
  7. Print the term of copyright;
  8. Review the manuscript assembled, correct any problems and finalize it by clicking "Complete submission". After that, wait for our confirmation of receipt by email;

Important:

  1. Confirmation of Submission: The author will receive an e-mail confirming receipt of the material. In case of non-receipt of confirmation within 24 hours, the author should contact the editorial office via e-mail: jornal@telessaude.uerj.br.
  2. The accompanying of the editorial progress of your file can be done at the site by using login and password in the "Access" section.
  3. If a new version of the file is required, this should be sent through the button "Submit new version" in the section "Access".
  4. The effective publication of any material is linked to the receipt of its term of assignment of rights signed by all the authors and co-authors. This term will be requested to the author by e-mail at the time of approval and must be printed, and faxed or e-mailed to the Brazilian Journal of TeleHealth
